THE SONIC NEGOTIATOR
In the early 80’s, I was working at The Record Plant in Sausalito, California, with my friend Tom Flye, audio engineer par excellence. He recommended Frank Hubach and Associates because of their expertise and more significantly, their having designed “The Plant.” I wanted to build a recording space to do projects and collaborate with others in the area.
I observed that the bulk of the recording process happened in one or two small rooms, square footage an afterthought. This organically illustrated to me that talent is everything, gear a critical ingredient. A focus on vocal tracking, the main narrative, supported by equally brilliant instrumental content would seize the day; quite a revelation for me at the time!
That’s what inspired me to build professional square footage. In 1984 everyone was recording analog using tape. 24 track was state of the art. It has evolved significantly since. Installing an analog API 1608 and Studer 24 track brings a sonically pleasing bit of déjà vu to this drummer.
I play professionally to this day and for over 20 years played drums with National Heritage Fellow and Grammy Award winner Queen Ida of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Touring internationally and performing across the United States, I learned much about America and American music. I’m still a life long learner, something new every day.
We negotiate in the present a musical landscape where the bulk of important content is not primarily or initially funded by record labels or angel investors. It is my observation that it starts from talent and passion.
From the outset I’ve worked to create an authentic, professional space to elevate music, whatever iteration. Hopefully the structure and the gear will speak for themselves.
